AREA OF PRACTICE

Anxiety

Anxiety has been called the “common cold” of mental health. In other words, it is a condition that many people are likely to experience, even on a transitory basis) at some point in their lives.

There are several different types of anxiety disorder. Some examples  include: Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD), Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD), Social Anxiety (formerly called Social Phobia), as well as the various Phobias, such as the Specific (also called Simple) Phobias.

Post-traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) has many of the features of an Anxiety Disorder. It has been categorized under a new category (Trauma and Stress or Related Disorders) in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of the American Psychiatric Association, 5th Edition (DSM-5).

In order to confirm a diagnosis of Anxiety Disorder, a Registered Psychologist would conduct a clinical interview and possibly administer extensively validated paper and pencil Psychological tests.

The good news is that there are tried and scientifically-tested Psychological treatments available to help people living with anxiety. Once he has confirmed your diagnosis, Dr. Weinberg will discuss the various treatment options available and will work with you on developing an evidence-based treatment plan that takes into account your individual needs and presentation.

The symptoms of PTSD vary from person to person. They often include:

  • Flashbacks of the event.

  • Avoiding people or situations that remind you of the event.

  • Trouble sleeping, recurring nightmares.

  • Depression and anxiety.

  • Irritability

  • Difficulty controlling anger.

  • Problems in your relationships with others.

If your symptoms are causing you distress or making it difficult to function it is important to get help for some relief and to prevent the symptoms from worsening.
